What size of violin is best for a 9 year old?

It depends on how big the child is. Many children of that age start on a 1/2 or 3/4 size violin. As a rough guide, you can have the child hold the violin in playing position (under the chin) and extend his/her arm out around the scroll (it's the wood part that looks like a thick coiled ribbon at the top of the violin). If your child can comfortably palm the scroll, it's probably a good size.
I hope this helps!
